The “Gays shouldn’t marry because of God says so” argument

I am so sick and tired of hearing this as a reason as to why gays should not be allowed to get married. Here are a few things heard, and my opinions.

  • The bible says that homosexuality is a sin. I’m going to start off by saying that I do not care what the bible says. That may sound harsh, but you know what? So is imposing your beliefs on other people. Because I do not believe in God, I do not believe this is a just reason to deny people the right to marriage.
  • Marriage is a Christian institution and is to be done between a man and a woman. I have a few questions for the people who give me this excuse. But my main one is what their opinions are on the fact that non-Christians [for example, Atheists] get married everyday, and why, if marriage is a “Christian institution”, are people able to get married through court… You know, without a priest. If marriage is a Christian institution, then shouldn’t that right be denied to all non-Christians? I am not in support of this, but the excuse that marriage is a Christian institution implies that it shouldn’t be granted to those who are not Christian. And by the way, I would like to add that marriage has been occurring long before Christianity existed. Not only that, but the institution of marriage exists in other societies that are not Christian based. So, how is this a solely Christian institution?

I know there are many more pathetic excuses given as to why homosexuals shouldn’t get married, but the two mentioned above have been haunting me the last few weeks [probably because we have been discussing this issue in class]. I believe all people deserve the right to love. Nobody should be denied that. And if expressing your love for someone means marrying them, let it be

Preach. Apart from that I don’t feel as though any of those things can actually be ticked off of that list.

None of those things can be checked off. And yes, it’s a damn shame.
